Shore Excursion and Port Review
St. Petersburg with a Private Tour - On Your Own

Nancy

We just got back from a Baltic cruise, August 9-23, 2005, and the highlight of our tour was St Petersburg, Russia for two days... We hired a private driver/guide through the internet and they provided the visa and paperwork to tour on our own. The tour company picked the two of us up at the ship, as scheduled, and we didn't stop all day. Our guide, Ludmilla, was fantastic, she was a historian, and didn't miss a detail and what a great personality, very funny and committed to making our visit memorable, which she did. We went to the local supermarket and to restaurants where the locals eat.. which was very tasty, both days. The tour price was not cheap, but it was well worth being able to go into the museums and churches without waiting in the lines and going into rooms ahead of the crowds.

Don't miss out on venturing on your own when you are cruising.. we did the same in Berlin and it was just as memorable with a great guide and driver which I got off the internet from reading cruise reviews and other people's experiences.

In the Scandinavian countries we did the "Hop On Hop Off" buses, which are headphone tours and you can spend as much time in places as you want and just catch the next bus... and they usually made a stop near the cruise ships.

It was a fun vacation and very interesting.
