The eternal city is jammed
with tourists in the summer. The line for the Vatican Museum was almost a
kilometer long when we were there. Even during the lunchtime lull, the
wait was almost an hour (entry, security screening, and ticket purchase
all had lines). Inside the crowds are so thick that only the ceilings are
unobstructed. As a more enjoyable alternative, make reservations by phone
or internet for the small but spectacular Galleria Borghese collection in
the Villa Borghese park. This museum admits a limited number of people for
two hours at a time – spend half on the paintings upstairs and half on the
sculpture downstairs, using the audioguide to increase your pleasure.
